The Field Report
Inside the high tunnels we had to keep those little plant babies covered for most of the month. By the last week of February we were able to uncover and water them. There is a little more damage/dead plants than I had expected. We'll go in and remove the bad stuff and seed some new stuff in the dead spots. Overall I am going to say we had about and 80% survival rate in there. I'm happy with that.
The other big news from the field is that we began moving tulips into the tunnel for early forcing. Fingers crossed we get some nice sunny days. We should have tulip flowers by the end of March if the weather will just be close to normal.
The Weather Report
Ok, February was cold! Like really cold. We had single digits and subzero overnights for quite a few days. More than half of the month was below average temps. Honestly, after these last few years of record breaking heat, I'm not going to complain about some cold.
AND we finally got some snow. I think we ended with about 15 inches total for the month. That still puts us at a deficit for the winter but at least I don't feel like we're going into the spring with a massive drought on our hands.
The Progress Report
This winter office project list is starting to wind down. The new website is done, I've transferred our email service, started a blog, (mostly) finished up the planting plan for the year, settled on a new book keeping and payroll provider, and started a YouTube channel (content coming soon!). Now I'm on to overhauling the price lists in our store front.
Out at the farm we have got tulips forcing in the high tunnel and ranunculus sprouting in the barn. They should be ready to go out in the tunnel right at the beginning of March. It feels late but all the cold weather had me nervous that I wouldn't be able to plant them when they needed to be planted.
